Nosedive is one of my favorite “Black Mirror” plots. I still remember the shock when I first saw this episode a few years ago. Obviously, the concept of social capital as an extremely precious commodity resonated strongly with me. The world depicted in “Black Mirror” is far from the current climate that social media and real life endure. However, there is a lot of evidence that our media consumption habits may be dangerous to our personal health and society as a whole. I agree with reading and this episode, because both point out the impact of unhealthy and superficial social media on people. They also talked about consumerism. As a society, we just want to have everything because we think this is the key to happiness. I think after social media, people will no longer pay attention to posting and liking pictures. The major social media platforms have been aware of this problem and have made some changes to eliminate the harm to mental health. For example, Instagram cancelled this feature, where you can see how many likes someone’s posts have received. This update is actually helpful to my mental health because I don’t have to worry about whether someone visits my posts without being visited. This allows me to post what I really want and what makes me happy, but not what other people want to see. Although this small change is a step in the right direction, much work remains to be done. I hope we will never reach the level where qualifications are determined by rank. Our emphasis and power on social media and commentary has greatly damaged our society.
